BURJ EL BARAJNEH CAMP

About the Camp

Burj El Barajneh refugee camp, located four kilometers from downtown Beirut, suffered significant damage during 1982 and the Lebanese civil war. Many Palestinian refugee camps were destroyed during this period, prompting reconstruction efforts in Burj El Barajneh. Unfortunately, constrained by time limitations and the urgent need for rebuilding, there was no opportunity to enhance the foundations of the camp. Consequently, the camp’s roads became extremely narrow, imposing significant strain on the infrastructure. In addition to the existing challenges, the camp has also experienced an influx of Syrian and Palestine refugees displaced from Syria due to the ongoing crisis.

Based on the official Population and Housing Census of Palestinian Camps and Gatherings in Lebanon of July 2017, the total population of Burj El Barajneh camp was found to be 20,683 individuals, with 84% identified as Palestinian and the remaining 16% representing other nationalities. Whereas UNRWA figures indicate 31 000 registered persons in Burj El Barajneh camp, the total number of UNRWA-registered Palestinian Refugees in Lebanon has reached 489,292 individuals as of March 2023.
