Burj El Shemali CAMP

About the Camp

Burj El Shemali refugee camp, located 3 km away from the city of Tyre in south Lebanon, suffered significant damage during the Israeli invasion in 1982, particularly between that year and the subsequent aftermath. Throughout this conflict, numerous structures were destroyed, resulting in the displacement of many Palestine refugees who had sought shelter there. The camp, established in 1948 to offer tented refuge for displaced individuals from Hawla, Tiberias, Saffouriyah, and Lubieh, continues to host Palestine Refugees from various parts of Lebanon, while also grappling with the added challenges stemming from the ongoing Syria crisis. The camp experiences a severe unemployment rate, and the primary income source for both men and women is typically seasonal agricultural labor.

Based on the official Population and Housing Census of Palestinian Camps and Gatherings in Lebanon of July 2017, the total population of Burj El Shemali camp was found to be 10218 individuals, with 93.8% identified as Palestinian and the remaining 6.2% representing other nationalities. The total number of UNRWA-registered Palestinian Refugees in Lebanon has reached 489,292 individuals as of March 2023.
