Ein El Hilweh refugee camp, located in the southern part of Lebanon in Saida, faced substantial issues of population density during the Lebanese civil war. These issues were intensified, particularly following the Nahr el-Bared conflict in 2007. In addition to the existing challenges, the camp has also been affected by an influx of Syrian and Palestinian refugees displaced from Syria due to the ongoing crisis. Notably, it holds the distinction of being the largest Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon.
Based on the official Population and Housing Census of Palestinian Camps and Gatherings in Lebanon of July 2017, the total population of Ein El Hilweh camp was found to be 21,209 individuals, with 95,7% identified as Palestinian and the remaining 4.3% representing other nationalities. Whereas UN-OCHA figures indicate 80 000 registered persons in Ein El Hilweh Camp, the total number of UNRWA-registered Palestinian Refugees in Lebanon has reached 489,292 individuals as of March 2023.
