Wavel CAMP

About the Camp

Wavel Refugee Camp, formerly a location of French Mandate era military barracks, is situated in the Beqaa Valley near Baalbeck, approximately 90 km east of Beirut.

Established in 1948, it served as a haven for Palestine Refugees and later, in 1952, the UNRWA took charge of delivering services within the camp. The former army barracks now shelter refugees, but inadequate sunlight, ventilation, and access to clean drinking water, despite some infrastructure improvements, create difficult living conditions in winter, highlighting broader challenges in Lebanon. In addition to the existing challenges, the camp has also experienced an influx of Syrian and Palestine refugees displaced from Syria due to the ongoing crisis.

Based on the official Population and Housing Census of Palestinian Camps and Gatherings in Lebanon of July 2017, the total population of Wavel camp was found to be 2165 individuals, with 94.5% identified as Palestinian and the remaining 5.5% representing other nationalities. The total number of UNRWA-registered Palestinian Refugees in Lebanon has reached 489,292 individuals as of March 2023.
